The Debate Of Traditional Books Versus Digital Books
It finally happened. More e-books were bought last year than books in print. This resulted in an intense discussion among a lot of people. There were some who believed that books should be printed in a traditional manner. They also believed that although technology has made leaps in changing human lifestyles, it is also fickle and irregular.
On the other hand, the e-book fans have a good point in that it makes books more portable and virtually un-damageable. It also makes them cheaper. In fact, in many cases, they’re free. Those are all great points.
Still, there is no replacing that feeling of sitting down with your favorite book, a big steaming mug of coffee and the whole afternoon in front of you. Obviously, it all comes down to your own temperament, but it’s something digital books cannot yet replicate.
It’s hard to get lost in an e-book. Often, the print is small and you might be reading on a laptop, phone or other device where you could get interrupted by phone calls or e-mails. A printed book, on the other hand, is actually a great form of escape from the world.
Another factor is worth considering. First issues of books in print can be very costly, while e-books can be obtained far easier aside from being cheaper.
When taking the value of printed books against e-books into consideration, books in print are, of course, more expensive compared to e-books. The thing with a regular book though is that it can have its place in the bookshelf and can be accessed without having to deal with device breakdowns and similar troubles.
There’s something to be said for the convenience of technology. The world is a better place because of technology in many ways.
This isn’t necessarily true with regard to literature though. Libraries and authors are both suffering from the onslaught of digital printing, and it may be a losing battle.
